You should only be a bar-back if you want to work someday as one of the main bartenders at a club. At a restaurant they will put you behind the bar with their specific training. Most of the time it is a co-operative experience; everyone does dishes and everyone makes drinks, as well as everyone has an equal share in tips. Since you are interested in the restaurants/hotel style bartending you will probably be trained to do it 'their' way...style of making drinks and recipes, and then you will be able to work for them. This is speaking from a current restaurant bartending experience...you shouldn't have to be a bar-back to bartend in these places..you actually really didn't even have to go to school for it, it is nice that you have your basics down but it will not get you a pay raise. Successful bartending is all about customer service, flair, and personality...I have met a few people who have gone to school that couldn't talk to a paper bag if you know what I am saying. As long as you are good with people you will do great;) Good luck to you!

Would you go to medical school to become a Nurse? Of course not - doesn't make sense. Come on. Those bartending schools are a ruse and joke. Anyone can sling a cocktail. The bars want charisma, sales skills, time management and the ability to run the place when your coked up asst. manager can't. Oh and that you DON'T STEAL. Bartending schools are for numbskulls.

bartending school is a total waste of money just get a job as a barback and get paid to learn your trade.

if someone came in looking for a bartending job that never work a bar but went to a bar school we would tell them to get the f*ck out..........best way to become a bartender is to barback first "the way i did it"......even barbacks make good $ best night for me barbacking i made $350....bartending just over $900........I liked being a bar back way better....drinking every night till i was so fu*ked up... some nights i would just sleep at work on the bar then just get up and start working again or if i was working a sat night walk over to church still buzzing lol im going to hell....I was like 17...so bad....now "bartending" you have to keep you head on, o yeah i still drink but i dont get that f*cked up at work lol........Hey stay away for the coke its too much $.....AND NEVER TAKE ANYTHING THATS NOT YOURS...people that own bars know other people that own bars and so on...if you fu*k up too bad you may never get a job at a bar again unless you move to a nother city....my boss never gave a sh!t if i was drinking on the job but check with your

I have been a bartender for 18 yrs and a bartender instructor as well and I have to say that while school is good and you can learn the drink recipes the best way to learn how to bartend is hands on experience...barbacking or not..good luck

My bartending skills were slim to none when I started as a bartender in training in 2000. 7 years later I'm the bar manager, I hope that says enough. Bye the way: it's a four star celebrity visited resort in central California.
