Why are traditional bottles of wine 750ml vs being 1/2 L or one full liter?!

Question:

Why are traditional bottles of wine 750ml vs being 1/2 L or one full liter?

Even a "big" bottle of wine is 1.5L (or twice the 750ml bottle), I've asked several wine shop owners and they really don't know either....

Answers:
Because it is the metric equivalent to a fifth of a magnum. Wine and other spirits come in fifths.

!/2 Lt would be considered a pint. 1.5 L in wine is called a magnum and in liquor a magnum is 1.75L. A pint of wine would not even get you slightly buzzed

1.75l of liquor is actually called a handle, and a typical serving of wine is 5 oz, and 750 ml equils 25.36 ounces, just a tiny bit over 5 normal servings. not sure if this is the exact reasoning, but it has some pretty good reasoning.
