What is "the worm" in tequila, and what does it do to you?!

Question: Actually mescal is a generic term meaning any distillate of the many species of agave (or maguey) plant, tequila included.

The worm is an agave worm which is a butterfly larve.

Doesn't do anything to you really. It's the mescal that will do something to you.

its an actual worm thats been soaked in the bottle and if you eat it you get really messed up.... but its always FUN TIMES lol

the worm is in mezcal, not tequilla, and it is harmless if you eat it. It is actually the larva of the agave snout weevil

It's a WORM - you know, the crawly things that live in dirt?
They put it in the bottle of tequila and it soaks up the alcohol. If you eat it, it's supposed to be really strong and you can get quite a buzz off it. I'm guessing you get a little extra protein too.
Lots of people play drinking games and the last person to drink from the bottle has to drink the worm too.

In some bars, there is an option to take a shot of tequila or some other kind of alcohol with a small worm at the bottom of the glass. Normally, it's the kind of thing a person would only do while drunk, and a lot of times the bar will takes pictures or give t-shirts or free drinks to the people that do it.
The worm is relatively harmless, and drinking it has no long lasting effects.

The worm in Mezcal, Is really their for show, People claim that if you eat the worm that you will hallucinate, I have eaten the worm plenty of times, And it does not make you hallucinate....

Actually, Tequila never has a worm in it. What you're talking about is Mezcal, and it's the larvae of the agave weevil on the bottom of the bottle. If you're man enough to drink the Mezcal, that little "worm" should be a piece of cake for ya!

Like everyone else said, the worm is found in Mezcal, not tequila. Both are made from the same plant, the agave, but tequila is made specifically from blue agave while mezcal can be made from any agave. The worm is a great marketing tactic- there is no way that it can survive the production process intact. The distillers add in the worm later and say that it has hallucinogenic effects- which it doesn't.

Iwhen its in mezcal it soaks up any toxins from the alchohal, alos they say if u eat it and live you will be granted superhuman strength.
