You couldn't have put it better.
Widmer isn't bad stuff, it's just different than the german-style hefeweizen. You shouldn't put them up against one another, they're really different styles and should be judged as such.
I am also german and LOVE german hefewiezen. However, I don't feel like spending a bunch on the good stuff at the german deli. I drink 3-5 widmer's a night.
I agree fully! There is no beer better then Heffeweizen. I go to a German restaurant in Anaheim California, I order Authentic German Heffeweizen along with Bratwurst and hot German Potato salad, YUM!!!
I haven't had Widmere but in general I agree the original European models are better than international copies, perhaps in part due just to the sourcing of the raw materials
Within those European archetypes though I tend to like Belgian tripels, British imperial stouts and pale ales best
