Have you got a good recipe for a home brew--something a bit stronger than wine?!

Question: Thanks

Answers: Thanks

In the U.S. you can ONLY make beer, wine and Mead (a kind of wine).

Making hard alcohol is NOT legal in the U.S. (For good reason if not made right it could make you very sick or even kill you!)

I have made beer home made beer that was 12% alcohol which is very strong as far as beer goes. It was tasty too. lol!

Drink less and drink a higher quality and do not worry about how "strong" it is.

If you insist on getting your jollies drinking something stronger go and buy some cheap liquor.

You cannot "brew" alcoholic beverages stronger than wine. The reason is because the alcohol produced during the fermentation kills the yeasts that produce the alcohol. This effect becomes pronounced at about 15% alcohol; by 20%, the yeast is killed. Think of it as suffocating in your own waste.

For stronger drinks, you need to distill alcohol from other brewed substances (beer or wine). This requires equipment, expertise, fuel, time, and a sense of danger, because it is dangerous and illegal.

I make rice wine, that is a bit stronger than wine. Actually, you can get up to about 21% alc but it depends on the yeast.

try google for 'sabah rice wine' (Sabah is the place where I come from...) and you follow the first link with the rice wine recipe; you might subsitute the traditional yeast we use with dried brewer's yeast...

happy brewing...!

If you live in a cold climate you can make applejack. First make some hard cider. Then set it outside in a large pot when the temperature is expected to be below zero Fahrenheit. In the morning, take off the layer of ice (frozen WATER). Repeat every cold night. I have been able to reduce by half - doubling the alcohol content. You could probably go even further. It ends up pretty tasty.
