Don't judge me...I have a question about....(box wine).?!

Question: Yes, I know, Box wine - bad rep!

But are there any decent boxed wines out there (or cheap bottles)?

We are hosting an afternoon casual open house for MIL 60th birthday. None of her friends are wine affecinados (my MIL thinks that Arbor Mist is a fine wine, not that anything is wrong with Arbor Mist - I think it tastes yummy - but it isn't "wine" in my book).

I'm looking for a good White Zinfandel or Blush Chablis - that seems to be a poplular with most people.

Any suggestions???

Almaden White Zinfandel bag in a box, Or for 750 ml bottles I would go with Beringer White Zinfandel or Sutterhome White Zinfandel, They are great white Zin's and very easy on your wallet, Or you can go with Carlo Rossi Sangria and just add your own chunks of fruit, Would make for a nice day, I wish her a very special Birthday....

Ernist and Julio Galo White Zinfandel

The Franzia brand is suppose to be ok. That and i think Gallo makesan ok Bag in a box.

Yes, there are decent boxed wines. The Australian brand Hardy's puts its wines in boxes. The Shiraz is good and lasts for weeks (unlike an opened bottle). It's every bit as good as inexpensive bottled Australian Shiraz (Yellow Tail, Lindeman's, Alice White, etc.). The Three Thieves brand from California has a nice Cabernet Sauvignon in a small box that is certainly not low quality.

I'm not too sure about blush in a box. I think most of them are the standard Franzia kind of thing that gives everyone a bad impression of boxed wine. White Zin is White Zin anyway though (usually pretty standard in flavor), so I suggest that you take a chance and buy a box.

I've bought a number of wines in boxes and in gallon jugs.

They are pretty much indistinguishable from the same wine in regular bottles.

If the cheapest wine is $10/gallon, paying $12/gallon will get you something that is *very* drinkable. And since the people you're serving won't know the difference between a $12/gallon wine and a wine that costs $60 for a 750 ml bottle, it's foolish to waste that extra money.

The only boxed wine I know is Franzia. I've never had it, but I've heard that it's drinkable.

If you have a Trader Joe's in your area, I would suggest going there and stocking up on their Charles Shaw ("2-buck Chuck) wine--they have several varieties, and they're very inexpensive but pretty good. That way, you don't have the "dreaded" box wine, and you can save the unopened bottles for another time.

there are losts of really good quality cask wine now. in austalia we have some fantastic ones
maybe try a white shiraz or a fruity white

cheep sparkling wines are good too.

You should never be judged on the quality of the wine you offer guests. Box or bottle, wine is for drinking with good food and good company. Lots of white Zins on the market even brand x is OK. It always occured to me that wine snobs would rather talk than drink. Salud!
