My mate in work says drinking a bottle of wine is like eating 2 pizzas, is he right?!

Question: Whereas another friend of mine told me the equivalent of a bottle of wine is like 6 bananas or something like that...I'm well confused!

An average (750mls) bottle of dry white wine has 429 calories where a slice of meat feast pizza has 337 calories. So there is far more calories in a whole pizza, let alone two. 100g of banana has 95 calories, so 6 banana's has more calories than a bottle of wine.

i think they are refering to calories.

beer has a lot of calories... as much as 2 pizzas?.... doubtful... but its one of those cliches to try and make us think about what we eat/drink.

are you talking about sugar content? or calories? or what?

cause I'm pretty sure you can't get drunk from eating pizza, or bananas for that matter.

I do think wine is fattening - as weight watches does not let you have any alcoholic beverages - but anything in moderation I say - drink and be merry

In relation to what? Calories/kilojoules or sugar or fat?
In reality, there is no such direct relation. Especially not between wine and pizza! Nor between wine and bananas or any other foodstuff. The only comparisons that can be made are between alcoholic drinks. You can compare white wine with red wine or wine with whisky etc.
Its like the old myth that one 340ml beer is the equivalent of X amount slices bread. Hogwash!
ADD: if you want to know which is healthest and least fattening, then whisky and red wine are your drinks. One glass/tot of each per day is actually very good for you. Its only if one over-indulge that its detrimental.

Haha, imagine them as a devil and a saint on one either side of your head ones saying drink a bottle because its like 6 bananas which is healthy and the other is saying its like 2 pizza's which is not, or is that the othe way round?

either way go drink the sweet wine and go use thrashing machinery.

A bottle of wine has a lot of calories, though I wouldn't say it's the same as 2 pizzas. Remember that pizzas have a lot of fat (which wine doesn't).

What wine does have is alcohol - which effectively is a sugar.
1ml of alcohol has 8.75 calories. So a 750ml bottle of wine at 14%ABV would have:

(750 x 14%) x 8.75 = 918.75 calories from the alcoholic content alone.

Bear also in mind that wine contains other sugars that will only add to the caloric content, so it will definitely be more than that. So with that, a bottle of red wine can easily top 1000 calories.

A quarter of a 13" "supreme topping" pizza would be about 400 calories. So a whole pizza would be 1600 calories, plus all the fat, salt and whatnots that go in the pizza.

However, if you were to eat a whole pizza, you'd not likely eat a second one. If you were to drink a bottle of wine, you're likely to be eating that pizza.

Try putting 2 pizzas in a glass, hold it up to the light, sniff their aroma, and slowly sip...

It depends of how much your pizzas are big and how much wine is in the bottle!!

no way,
1] jesus couldnt turn water into a pizza
2] you can still legaly drive after eating 2 pizza's
3] you would look silly in a bar with a glass of pizza
4] maybe thats how some people get cheesey feet from treading cheese instead of treading grapes when making there wine,
5] vintage wine is still drinkable vintage pizza would be mouldy.

it is only sugars that make calories. The amount of sugar in something burns at a certain rate that makes calories. Most wine are low in sugar some are high. The label should tell you how much is in it.

Live Long Live Free

maybe he go so pissed after the wine he got the munchies and ate 2 pizzas

That's like saying being punched in the head is like being punched twice in the chest.

In calorific terms pizzas very so much in terms of size and content it isn't possible to do a meaningful comparison. There are a lot of calories in the alcohol and the sugar in a bottle of wine.

Personally I think you should be more concerned about the permanent brain damage and long term liver damage the alcohol will do. In the case of pizza the enormous amount of saturated fat will do significant damage to your blood vessels.
Pizzas contains a lot of salt, which won't do your blood pressure much good either.

The answer therefore is take both in moderation if you want to live a long and happy life.

crikey so what percentage of gda is beer? if it contains calories and i'm allowed 2000 a day how many beers can i have they should put calories on cans too 4 us alco's

nope, not even close. two pizzas of medium size would have roughly 300 calories a slice x 16= 4800 calories. bottle of wine has probably 100 calories per glass times 3-4.
