- Absinthe is not and never was hallucinogenic, it's a myth.

- Real absinthe does not "taste bad", it's prime characteristic is precisely it's taste, it's the most complex tasting alcoholic beverage there is since it's grape alcohol distilled together with up to 9 different herbs, the main one is not even wormwood but green anis, so all real absinthes are sweet although strong.

- In the US, the only country in the world where it is ridiculously forbidden, you can order and drink it at home legally.

- "Czhechsinth", the dreaded low grade grain alcohol with artificial colourings and flavourings is not real absinthe, that's why they have several commercial gimmicks, among them their enphasis on absinthe's fake hallucinogenic properties and the famous flaming sugar cube, it's a fake, nobody ever drank absinthe that way in the XIX century.

- What absinthe to choose, preferably french or better, swiss. They're expensive but since it's not meant to be drank straight, one bottle lasts long.

- How to drink it: pour a small ammount of absinthe, one third of a large glass; very slowly, drop by drop preferably pour ice cold water, at least 2 parts of water to one of absinthe; if it's real absinthe (that can be either clear or green) it will begin to get milky white, a proof of it's authenticity. In the XIX century, although it didn't needed more sweetness, it was customary to melt a sugar cube into it by pouring down the ice water over the sugar cube placed in a special spoon because sugar was not as common as it is today, it was an "exotic" touch to had the once luxurious and expensive sugar.

Finally, CHEAP VODKA WITH WORMWOOD LEAVES SOAKED IN IT IT'S NOT ABSINTHE, that's why some people think it is bitter, the plant wormwood is indeed extremely bitter on it's own.

I've never tried it, but i've read about it alot. There's a good website you should go to. check out http://www.erowid.org/experiences/exp.cg... and there's a big list of peoples expiriences with absinthe. its a great site to use if your ever going to try something new.

Think of it as a bitter and stronger Sambuca without the thickness.

The taste isn't really something to write home about, if you're really trully interested in the taste, you'll have to do it with sugar. Else I doubt you'll really be able to enjoy it.

I've tried absinthe. I bought it online from a place in Czech. and with the shipping is a bit pricey. It does not taste like Nyquil tho. It actually tastes like black licorice so if you are an Uzo lover this would be right up your alley. The stuff I had was pretty potent stuff. As far as legality goes the food and drug administration has a ban on it due to the wormwood oil that is used to make it which is why you cannot buy it here in the states.

I tried it when I was 18 or 19 in Germany. Tastes a lotlotlot like Pernod if you're looking for a similar flavor. If you're not into the ouzo and jager tastes, then it probably wouldn't be your bag. I'm a big black licorice fan, so I loved the stuff. I remember it being kind of thick, quite strong, but really pretty with a nice flavor. Give it a try if you go abroad!

Absinthe makes the brain go wander............

I drank a few too many one evening and woke up the next morning with my car still running, an empty tank and had not moved and inch, it is very powerful stuff..... be careful and dont be an idiot like me and even think of drinking and driving, not that I was thinking at the time.
