bar back is a bartenders helper in ANY BAR...not EVERY BAR.....but hole in the wall places have them too. go to Temple Bar in SF, CA on Turk and Polk St....they'll be there! go to Gordon Beirschs in SF, CA on Harrison and Embarcadero and they hjave them there!
they restock, clean glasses, ring people up, bring food out.
Busy restaurants might have them.
All they really do is bring in new cases of beer, stock the fridge and make ice.
Ok, what is a barback?
Any Bar/Club/Restuarant that gets very busy and the bartenders don't have time to refill the ice, cut fruit, or run for backup bottles/beer usually have a barback. I worked in a club where we had to have 3 barbacks to keep up.
