I want a full flavored beer, like beer tasted in the 1960's and a little on the sweet side and strong.?!

Question: What brand of beer do you suggest?
I'm sick and tired of Budweiser, Coors, and Miller, I like Samual Adams, but thats way too expensive!

I am a former chef and in my 50's, your looking for as one person said a bock or here in Canada and there are some Uk brews called "Porters" they are not really high alcohol, but do have a bit of a sweet aftertaste, many because of the malt and brewing process, Molsons here makes a cream porter, there are several UK types, find a store that sells alot of imported, in the US try a craft brewed on, Samuel Adams make something like it.

Then there are the regional micros, look for anything with the name porter, stout is a bit sweet except for Guinness, coffee or fruit based beers, dark lagers also.

Too bad they don't make beer like they used to. I remember good ole Iron City Beer or Plain ole Budweiser. Maybe you should see what the local beers are in your area and ask the local beer distributor. They might be able to give you some suggestions and you can see the prices for yourself.

you know what they say, you get what you pay for.

Steel Reserve some of us still enjoy the Lap of Luxury....

San Miguel Beer.

Yuengling is a beer that is a very good value. It's a real beer but not as expensive as others of the same taste level. Unfortunately it's not distributed everywhere.

There's also a beer from Thailand called Singha. They call it a lager, but it seems to have more ale-ish bite to it than most.

Saranac makes a number of good beers, and it's moderately priced. Two other good ones are Brooklyn Brewery and Smuttynose, but they cost more. You might like Moretti Rossa, which is from Italy.

You could try brewing your own. It's a fun hobby and you can play with a recipe until you get it just the way you like it. Chances are your "mistakes" will be worth drinking too. My own favorite is bock. American bock is too light for my taste and European bock just the opposite. I now brew a hybrid bock [somewhere around Icelandic, I guess :-)]. Have you ever tried double bock? You might like it. Now I'm trying to recreate an abbey beer that I can't buy.

Getting started requires a fair amount of equipment which can be expensive (kits run $50-70 or thereabouts) if you don't get it on eBay or craigslist or make your own. You might want to start with Papazian's book The New Complete Joy of Homebrewing and see what you need to buy and what you can scrounge or make yourself. Once you have the setup, you can brew a 5-gallon batch (about 2 cases) for about $30.

Yea I remember Brown Derby from the Saweway stores 1960's...
so you know something about Samual Adams..
why not make your own beer and if YOU get it right,,,! SM will judge it..

PS I drink Keystone Premium red can $4.89/12pk

You can't get good beer cheap, you can get crappy beer cheap, but like homie said you get what you pay.

As far as brewing your own beer, I only end up paying about $17, harvesting my own yeast, and I get a great tasting beer every time. I've brewed about 15-20 batches, and after 5 batches I got it down to where I had clean, crisp, refreshing beer with great taste every time. The key is to be sanitary, after that you can go whatever route you want. I've brewed some American Pale Ales with great results, real hoppy and floral, and I've brewed some porters and stouts with great results. I now have a closet full of cases of beer that I brewed. Great tasting beer too, you only know when you do it though. I brewed a chocolate stout using real hersheys chocolate and unfortunately 2 cases was not near enough after my "friends" got a taste of it. I'll tell you one thing, brewing your own beer will make you a TON of "friends".

edit:
Ok, this idiot who claims Canadian beer has more flavor and body than American beer, bring your undereducated self to California or Oregon and try one of the local microbrewed offerings, you'll be crosseyed drunk after 2-3 beers and the thought that any Canadian LAGER would have more body than our fresh brewed ALES would never enter into your sloshing brain. Idiot. "Corona is a good beer". Try some Anchor Steam, Deschutes, Sierra Nevada, Samuel Smith, they will kick the @SS of anything Canadian. With their flapping heads and beady little eyes........

Get yourself some CANADIAN beer. You'll find it's got more body and flavour over American beer. However, the Canadian beer you might be able to buy in the U.S. is usually brewed to U.S. specifications; and that can alter the taste greatly.
I find that Corona is a good beer; and very popular too. You can get the usual Corona, or Corona Extra.
Give it a try!!!

Like you, I got sick of Miller and Coors. After experimenting I found India Beer by Molsons is a crisp tasting beer and it doesn't have that yukky after taste.
