How many units of alcohol do people really consume each week?!

Question: Do you think you drink too much?
I share a bottle of wine with the husband most nights!

I share a bottle of wine with the husband most nights!

Im a recovering alcoholic, and when I asked recovering alcoholic doctor friend of mine the same question. He said that however much a patient told him they drank, he automatically doubled it.

On average, none - but I tend to 'save up' my allowance and get blasted once in a while...

You sound like me! Though I am trying to cut back as wine makes me put on weight - as soon as I cut back I lose weight.

A lot more than I tell the Doctor.....and I suspect most people are the same....at least a couple of whiskies each night, and a bottle of wine at the weekend....maybe a bit more in summer when the Barbie gets lit.

I have recently made a decision to cut back on my drinking and am now limiting myself to one bottle of wine per week, which I normally drink over two or three evenings. Before I did this I think I was getting through three to four bottles a week plus a few pints in the pub on a Saturday, without really realising; that IS too much!

I average about 50 units a week all crammed into three days.

This is about 7 pints on Friday night and a vodka and coke.

8-10 pints on Saturday and several vodka and cokes and usually a few shots.

And 4-5 pints on Sunday afternoon and maybe a couple glasses of wine.

Way to much.

Maybe two bottles of wine a week.

Plus three or four beers Friday after work.

And a shot of vodka in my morning coffee

Maybe a bourbon chaser with my afternoon heroin.

Usually some cream liquor on my breakfast cereal.

And a nice snifter of cognac just before bed.

Not much really... Nowhere near as much as my 8 year old daughter.

If I go out I'd drink about 5-6 bottles of beer, on average. But I usually only go out about once, sometimes twice a week. If I stay in at the weekend I'd share 2 bottles of wine between myself and sister/friend, but only on a Friday or Saturday, never mid week as I've to get up too early.

I very rarely get drunk when I'm out as beer fills me up before it can have any real affect, I'd only drink wine with a meal or at home (otherwise I would get very drunk), and I can only manage one or two gin and tonics before my stomach gives way!

I think to share a bottle of wine with your husband is ok, sure isn't it good for you? LOL, and its my only vice (unfortunately)

last week zilch but only because hubby works away, he'll be home this weekend hurrah so ill more than make up for it *hic*

Not a lot as I rarely drink

the actual limits on what an adult should consume in a week were not based on scientific facts, one of the scientists who helped produce them has said recently.

I find most people drink every day. The amount really is irrelevent as long as a person has their drinking under control and is healthy. In any given day I usaually consume between 1-5 beers and 1-2 glasses of wine, starting about 5:00 in the afternoon. I usually drink about 5 nights a week. However I run bike or swim everyday, I'm in good shape and I don't usually get drunk, so wheres the harm? Also, a bottle of wine is only four glasses, I certainly wouldn't be concerned about that.

I average a case of beer everyday, I don't think that I drink to much, I can still function....

I don`t count how many units, when I think I`ve had enough I stop. I have been drinking like that for 35 years and there is nothing wrong with any of my organs. I have had tests.

More than they tell their Doctors eh?

I drink far too much, although i am confused about the whole unit thing. They should just make each drink either 1 small unit or a large one and then we'd all know the exact amount to drink.
On saying that, i'd still drink too much!!!!

The recommended alcohol limit (14 or 21 units per week) was chosen following suveys based on what people were willing to admit to their doctors. People tended to underestimate what they drank when quizzed. Consequently the set limits are very conservative, and for most people it may be fine to exceed them.
