Do Bartenders ever fight over what shifts they get?!

Question:

Do Bartenders ever fight over what shifts they get?

So thye get the fun ones?

Answers:
Wow, umm don't answer this question unless you are a bartender.

There is a packing order when it comes to shifts. The Bar Manager makes the shifts (in which he usually gives himself the best nights to work). Then he works his way down by seniority. Those with the least experience or those that were just hired are going to be getting the Monday shift and other day shifts. That's just the way it works. Now if you are working at a bar that has only a few bartenders employeed (like I do), we usually work out a schedule together and alternate the "big" nights weekly. We try to keep it fair across the board.

Currently Bartending in MO. I used to be a Bar Manager at a different bar.

i am sure they do, just like everyone else who has a job

yes.... because better shift, better crowds and tips= more money =">

probably!

yeah it sucks being stuck with the Monday morning shift versus the Saturday night spurs game shift, but all in all we are all one happy dysfunctional and drunk family

I'm sure they do especially because of tips and pay, more crowded times of the day, like at night, probably have more customers thus more tips.

Yes they fight, but usually not for fun shifts. It's usually over the highest paying shift. Weekends and special events are likely to be busier and a good bartender will make a lot more on those nights.

Of course there are better and worse shifts. Bartenders have to "earn" the good shift. An inexperienced bartender would "drown" during a busy shift, would NOT make good tips, and would create more work for the other bartenders on the shift (who are splitting the tips) - who will resent working with them. Bartenders generally start with the slower, quieter shifts to get used to the layout of the bar, the locations of the bottles, etc. As they build up a clientele and gain confidence and experience, they will move to better shifts. Same goes with waiting tables.

I am a bartender and we don't fight over shifts because the best shifts are given to the bartenders with the most seniority, then if they don't want that particular shift they can pass it off to anyone they want. At are bar it works well and you know that is how it works from day one.

Oh, yes, most want the shift with the big tippers,

I work in a small bar where i live and the owner just set the day we work and if we need the night off we just trade so no we really don't fight over the shifts.

Yes, because everyone in there right mind wants friday and saturday nights to work...alot busier and more tips....lol

The manager/owner of the bar decides who works what shifts. It's not up to the bartenders.

sometimes but the better bartenders with the higher customer average get the better shifts... the ones that sell more get the chance to sell more and get better shifts

of course this is america
