Is there much difference in taste between Johnnie Walker Red or Johnnie Walker Black?!
Answers: There is a huge difference, not just in age, but in the whisky used in the blend. The cornerstone (what the blend is built on) of Johnnie Black is a Single Malt called Cardhu. Black has more pronounced smoke and peat, and is a much more complex scotch than red. Black is the cheapest scotch I own. I use it for people who want to mix it or don't really care what kind of scotch they drink. That doesn't mean I think it is bad, I just think it is an everyday scotch. Red on the other hand isn't good in my oppinion. Gold and Blue are fine (I own both), but not worth the price. I would much rather have Macallan 18yo or Balvenie 21 yo Port Wood for the price. I'm not really a Green Label fan...too much peat and smoke for me. You really need to find a scotch bar with a good selection, or better yet a free scotch tasting at your local liquor store. The Still offers at least 1 free scotch tasting per year, and places all their single malts (over 100) on sale for the entire months of April and September Hope this helps.
There is an appreciable difference as Black is a significantly older blend. Whether or not its worth the difference is subjective.
Yes there is. And the reason is:
1.- The whiskys which make up Johnnie Walker Red Label are matured for a minimum of five years and for the Black Label are matured for a minimum of twelve years.
2.- Once sufficiently matured, approximately forty malts are blended together to make Johnnie Walker Black Label and about thirty five are used for Johnnie Walker Red Label.
The flavor of each whiskey is a combination of three factors: smell. taste and feeling. So if it's origin are quite different then the flavor will also be.
