I personally can't drink wine, it makes me sick, but bring on the vodka.

There is probably something in the beer (sulfites?) that is causing your hangovers. Rum has no need for preservatives like sulfite because the higher alcohol content acts like a preservative. That's also why you can store hard liquor at room temperature.
I've heard that brown liquore tends not to leave hangovers, hence why most alcoholics choose this liquor.
I don't get hangovers from whiskey or any other brown liquor, but I do from any other kind of alcohol.
