What is a great red wine?!

Question:

What is a great red wine?

I would like to buy a friend a bottle of red wine as a thank you gift. I would like to spend no more than $100...any suggestions?

Answers:
If you are going to spend that kind of money, might as well have them know you did. Go for a big California Cabernet Sauvignon, or a "Meritage" (a Bordeaux style blend of, usually, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot) Some well known labels:

Opus One
Caymus
Silver Oak
Joseph Phelps Insignia
Groth
Jordan

To a wine lover any of these labels (and more I did not mention) are a gift of taste and knowlege, sure to be appreciated. (I know I would!)

I am a wine distributor, lover, and enthusiast in California.

Anything Australian but go to a really good store if u want to spend that much get vintage and good advise.
Note save the label carefully and cork. Make a plaque or scrapbook the wine. Add more as u go along. Martha Stewart has ideas I usually get great craft stuff from the magazines or website.

you can pick up a copy of wine speculator from a book store, it'll help you with your decision. it really depends on what your friends like? italian wines are really in right now. try a good super tuscan if you like a punch you in the face kinda wine, really rich and tannin-y. i personaly don't think you need to buy one quite that expensive.

I agree with an Australian red.
Penfold's shiraz is excellent and inexpensive.

Opus One if you want to spend around $100 (in ohio it is a bit more than that)

If you want to spend a little less than half

Banfi C u m Laude is about $40.

Cakebread or Rombauer

Here you go: please make sure they know what your giving. Nothing say's oops like drinking a $100 bottle when you thought it was less! I'm not saying leave the price tag, but tell them to enjoy it on a special occasion.

Red Zin - Turley,
Cab Sauv - Paul Hobbs, Heitz Cellars, Quilceda Creek
Merlot - Duckhorn, Jarvis
Meritage - Cain Five
Pinot Noir - Patz and Hall, Foxen, Miura

or, nothing says thank you like Champagne:
Perrier Jouet (flower bottle)

Stags Leap Cellars Fay cabernet sauvignon is an excellent bottle of wine.

Try a Bordeaux, either a St-émilion or Pessac-Léognan (Médoc are sometimes a bit difficult to approach and may need more aging). Though quite different, they are both powerful, rich and complex wines. Get a 2000 vintage if you can.
