I agree with "is it 5." I've been in western Europe a few times (including Italy) and although I imbibe hard liquor here in the States, it never even occurred to me to buy it abroad. If you do, your best bet may be in a duty-free shop. But if you go to a grocery store in Italy, you will find that wine is sometimes even cheaper than water and a lot of it is very good.

In general, prices in Europe will seem higher than they are here in the States. The euro is very strong against the dollar. Tip: If you like peanut butter, bring your own because it will be nearly impossible to find. Have fun!

Oh--and one thing I regret...I wish I had brought a good bottle of tequila as a gift to my host (or local friend, etc.). That is harder to find in Europe.

Buy it at the duty free shop.
But while in Italy, why not try some of the local concoctions?
I'm no fan of grappa, but sambucca isn't bad, and you are likely to find some decent brandy, and certainly good wine.
