I like the book, FROM GRAPE TO GLASS. That will start your education. You really need to drink a lot of wine to learn about it.
If you are a novice, join a wine club and buy a subscription to Wine Enthusiast. Wine Spectator may be a little advanced.
Read what you can and drink what you can. It won't take long before you can carry on a decent wine conversation!
For me, it is a labor of love!

In long Island they have places you can go to sample wine . I went once and hated it because they make you swirl the wine , smell the wine , look at the color , tell them what exactly the texture is and finally taste the wine . Long story short it took about 30 minutes to have one sip .

Edit - My point was I didn't understand the whole wine process but if you have the patience , by all means you should follow it as it seems you might enjoy it .

take a class, visit wineries for tasting and education, read books and mags, learn from other winies

Go to a fancy resturant and ask them if they know anything about it.

Drink as much as you can (not to the point of alcoholism) and always try new and different things. I have got to the point where I will try a few wines of the same varietal or region or winery in the same month or so.

Books and all that will only get you so far. They will help you understand what comes from where, but only you can decide what you like.

I've used a few podcasts to get info. Started with Wine For Newbies, which did basic lessons on different varietals, but the guy got too boring after a while. Gary at Wine Library TV does a new video podcast almost every weekday and he talks about so many different parts of the wine world. I get a lot from that show. In the end, though, you gotta get out there and try some wines.
