Best method for mixing Mojitos? Funky taste?!

Question: This is what I do: approx. 10 small mint leaves, then three lime wedges (about half a lime) and simple syrup, muddle, add ice and then Canada Dry carbonated water.

However, my mixture is good, but it tastes kind of funky sometimes. I cannot tell if it is the fact that I try to use simple syrup rather than strait sugar, or if it is the brand of soda water I am using. It tastes good, but it just seems to leave sort of a bad aftertaste sometimes that I don't like and don't get from bar Mojitos. Any help on solving the funkiness?

Make sure to wash the limes before you use them. A lot of bars also use a mojito mix and add only the rum. You could also try tasting all of your components by themselves to determine which one has the funky taste.

Your putting too much mint leaves. Try half the amount of mint leaves and quarter the amount of lime. No syrup or sugar. That's why you got the funky taste.
