Question:

What are the requirements of someone applying for a license to serve alcohol?

I WANT TO OPEN A SMALL BAR WITHIN A RETAIL STORE IN ENGLAND,UK. IM HOPING TO SERVE HOT/COLD BEVERAGES & ALCOHOLIC COCKTAILS AND WINE, WHAT TYPE OF LICENSE DO I NEED? ALSO IS THERE A MINIMUM AGE TO BE LICENSE HOLDER? THANK YOU.

Answers:
you have to be 18 to apply for a licence ,you will need an on licence if your serving drinks on the premises,an off licence is selling so customers can take away. you will have to have a police check to see weather you are fit to hold a licence,no criminal records except very minor offences e.g. fines or cautions

licencee

first you will need a premise licence for the property, then a personal licence, which invloves a one day course and exam, you must have no criminal record and get clearance from police, not sure of min age, prbably be 21?
there are two types of licences available for the premises, on sale and off sale, you may also get a licence which does both, this is obtaoned through your council and one person will have to be a designated premises supervisor and is respobsible for all training of staff etc.

you have to be able to handle more than 10 shots in a half hour w/o puking.

You would rather ask here,, where me,, a Californian
Is going to tell you to ask your local health and state officials.
I think the MOST important item YOU need is MONEY.

For selling alcohol you need a licence from your local magistrates, you have to be of good character i.e. not being in trouble with the Police for 5 years or more. And finally a 14 year old boy became a Landlord of a public house about 4 months ago. Good luck it's hard work and long hours.

With respect to some of the answers from people who have attended the course and / or are licensees you are mixing your facts up a little bit ! ' Retailing alcohol' ie.anything with an ABV content exceeding 0.5% alcohol is classed as a 'licensable activity' ( hot food becomes a 'licensable activity' bet 11.00 p.m. & 5/00 a.m. ) and you will need a 'premises licence' granted from you local 'licensing authority' ie. your local council, which has replaced the old Licensing Justices based at Magistrates Courts. Additional you will need one person with a 'personal licence' who is termed the 'designated premises supervisor'. You can hold both licences yourself but to be a personal licence holder you have to be over 18, passed a qualifying examination, not have had a previous personal licence disqualified within a previous 5 yr period and not have an 'unspent relevant convictions';. Unspent relevant convictions basically means that IF you have previous convictions the police will look at when you were convicted and the individual offence to see if it undermines the 'licensing objectives' basically will you be a proper person to take on the legal responsibilities, preventing crime, not being a public nuisance and similar. All these expressions and rules came into effect about 18 mnths ago now with the new 'Licensing Act 2003'. As you might expect I have had to simplfy this answer for you. If you are on one of my training courses I'll explain it for you fully !.
