This here's what I do:

Before you start mixing, make some simple syrup (1 cup water and 1 cup sugar, dissolved and brought to a boil). Have it cooled down in the fridge. If you're in a rush, splenda will dissolve in anything even if it's very cold.

1) Put some ice cubes into the glass you will use.

2) Add between 1.5 to 2 Shots of tequila (the lighter in color the better. a very good one for making margaritas is called "Cabrito" because it's not expensive but doesn't taste terrible).

3) Half a shot of tripple sec, cointreau, or Grand Marnier, also add into the glass.

4) Squeeze the juice of at least half a lime into the glass. If you are not using a juicer, you may want to use more than half a lime depending on the tartness level you like.

5) Top it off with simple syrup (or stop when you think it's sweet enough).

6) pour everything (ice and all) into a shaker, shake it up, then pour it back into the glass. Garnish with a lime and you're done.

Tips:
Adding some lime peel zest (big slices from a lime skin taken with a potato peeler) to the bottle of tequila will infuse the whole thing with a nice lime taste and make it that much better.

I DON'T use Roses Lime Juice. It's just as bad as using a mix and is sweetened with high fructose corn syrup which makes the drink come out tasting like bad soda.

When I make them at home I use Jose Cuervo Tequila. Hope that helps!

A classic margarita is made with Triple sec and I prefer gold tequila in mine. Siler (sauza) is fine, but the gold is a smoother taste. Anything orange based for a secondary liquer (to cut the bitterness) will work - you can make a blue margarita with Blue caracao (very tasty, but very girly). Always salt the rim (run a lime around it first, then dunk in salt) - a course bar-salt can be purchased in most larger stores.

Why mess up perfectly good jose cuervo with all that flavoring crap.
I drink my liquor straight and neat.
no bullsh*t !
