Wine when pregnant?!

Question: I realize this is a odd question, but I am pregnant, and ive heard that red wine is actually good for you (not to get drunk off of , but to have maybe half a wine glass). Is this true? If it is, (I dont know squat about wines) is there a red wine out there that is ''fruity''?

I would ask your doc- my doctor said it was okay to have a glass or 1/2 glass of wine a day. I had several girlfriends who drank- very modestly while pregnant- but I only had the nerve to once! As long as you don't drink more than a glass- I think you should be fine- but ask your doctor!

The Olive Garden has a good house red that isn't too bitter, I wouldn't realyy consider any reds to be fruity though, my mom was told to drink red wine and hated all the others she tasted besides the house red at Olive Garden. You can buy it to take home.

I wouldnt recommend any alcohol truthfully. I'm opposed to that not because of any ethical issues but primarily bc of the fear of even taking a chance of increasing the risk of defects or other complications. Side Note: Also, against parents who use liqor to get the babies or toddlers drunk to help them pass out or ease up from a sickness. What a horrible method. In any case, I suggest asking your doctor or consulting a physician. I was told that instead of indulging in your temptation to smoke (if you do) or drink that the most beneficial way to help the pregnancy is to have more sex. So if you're looking for ways to limit discomfort during the labor and increase overall health while pregnant then go ahead and have more sex........but stay away from the booze in any form it comes in. :) Congrats and wish you the best.

A fruity red that becomes available the Saturday before Thanksgiving is Beaujolais Nouveau. Nice and inexpensive. Best drunk between late November and the end of January. Not to be confused with Beaujolais Villages (Nice but not as fruity and has a longer shelf life).

And, remember you're drinking for 2 so keep smart about it and ask your doc

I'm not a doctor by any means, but I'll tell you what my well-respected OBGYN said. One tiny glass of wine, only 3 times a week. And that's not 3 tiny ones in one night, just one a night, 3 nights a week.

For a fruity wine, I've heard pinot noirs have fruity flavors, and if you just like sweet reds, Lambrusco would be a good choice.

It is true that red wine contains antioxidants, which, in moderation, can be good for you.

Ethyl alcohol, the most prevalent alcohol in alcoholic beverages, is a poison that our bodies are able to slowly metabolize. There are also traces of other alcohols, including methyl alcohol (wood alcohol), isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol), etc.

Although a developed human being has a variety of ways to deal with such toxins, be it through special enzymes such as ADH (Alcohol Dehydrogenase) or through simple excretion, your unborn child may not have these capabilities, depending on what stage of development it is in, etc..

Thus, science dictates that drinking is generally a bad idea when you're pregnant, regardless of the theoretical health benefits you may receive from drinking any alcoholic beverage. Obviously many people get away with it, but it still boils down to playing Russian Roulette with your unborn child.

they say a glass a day is ok in the uk

The last in ever-changing yes and no's that I've heard is that a glass a wine (4 ounces - a restaurant pour is typically 6 ounces) a week is okay. However, I cannot find any evidence to back this up and I do not recall where I read it. I do know that it was at least a year ago - and by now, it has probably changed again, or maybe it was a fluke report.

The most negative thing to hit home to me is how much the fetus feels the alcohol compared to how much you do. I.E., you're buzzed, you're fetus is passed out.

My best guess, if there is nothing good out there to support the evidence of approval (not at the U.S. Surgeon General, any health sites, etc. - nothing "positive" came up) is not to bother. A four ounce glass of wine is equal to a half a cup, and if that is not even advisable, it does not seem worth it to chance.

If you are still looking for a "fruity" red wine - maybe for someone else - a lot of people need to know what you mean by fruity. Some people ask me to advise them on a fruity red and I will sell them a pinot noir, a Beaujolais, or a Barbera D'asti, and they will complain because it's dry! They said "fruity," not "sweet"! If you're looking for sweet, I have only run into cheaper (that a lot of people like) reds that are so. A lot of them are generic Lambrusco's. There is also this stuff that is like $3 a bottle that my friends swore by called "Cold Duck." It was sweet. And really gross. I guess that my not having a "real job" as opposed to theirs has boosted my snotty wine buds! ( : Also, many desert wines can be sweet, but they are typically syrupy, almost twice as strong in alcohol content, and are supposed to be consumed in small amounts (not the kind of thing that you want to get drunk on) to complement a meal or, well, a dessert.

I really hope that you don't get attacked for asking this while pregnant, and people take into consideration that you asked before doing because medical reports do change.

I have heard that too.

After my son was conceived, we were very strict about virtually everything---drinking, smoking, and food. But I do recall hearing that a small amount of red wine was ok, and took it for good advice, though I cannot recall precisely where I heard it. Maybe not each and every day, but in moderation.

Let's say a person regularly drinks 1+ bottles every day, then they quit cold turkey and are "freaking out" with stress; if you were one of those persons, I would say that the stress is worse for you than having to abstain from your bottle of wine each day than the glass of wine would ever amount to. If you were having one a day though, I would say that you really should wean yourself off right away.

My friend is a coroner, who does autopsies, and he told me that every person who comes to him, when they are known drinkers, their blood vessels are clean. Non drinkers are far more often not this way. This is to the point that he and his wife try and drink two to three drinks (they choose red wine first) every day. Wine---especially red wine--- has antioxidants, and is generally healthy.
Chianti is fruity and red, although there likely are more fruity ones than this. I do not recommend merlot, burgandy, or cabernet sauvignon.

you'r not suppsed to drink any kind of alcoholic drinks when your pregnant .....even if it is just wine it's not good for you r baby , that causes birth difects and stuff you friggin idiot !!!!! how stupid can you be?

When I was pregnant. my doc told me it was ok to have half a glass of wine a day. Its very good for not only your heart but for the baby's heart. I love red wine, but I like really bold deep tastes. You could try a pinot noir, its not as strong as other red wines. Well hopefully I was some help. Good luck! =)

Check with your Doctor, as he knows best. And if you do decide to keep it to a minimum. Hope everything turns out just the way you want it to.
