Lite beers?!

Question: I am not trying to be condescending here but why do the Americans and Canadians go for 'Lite' beers (miller lite, coors lite, bud lite etc etc)

These beers already taste like p**s, so why make them worse?? beats me!

or is it something to do with low alcohol = drink more before being over the driving limit perhaps in which case fair enough, but the 'Coors Lite' harps on about the 'Great Lite taste'

When I have a drink I want to actually taste something.

Don't lump all Americans together. I don't touch that stuff.

It started first as a health issue. People wanted to drink but didn't want the beer belly. After that marketing kicked in and the only advertisement you ever see are for light beers. People are sheep and buy what they are told to. They are told it tastes good, so they think it tastes good. People are told that shopping at one store makes them better than shopping at another so they go there. See?

And to Beth:

They are lighter (though be it slightly) in alcohol. The average light beer being 4% or 4.1% and the average American crap lager being in the neighborhood of 5%.

yeah i dont think id be bothered drinking a lite beer. Same with non alcoholic beer-why not just get a 7up or something instead that tastes half decent

yes and so say all of us.

Lite beer is not lite on alcohol, just lite on calories. I'm an American who doesn't get why people drink it. I think they are more interested in getting drunk than in enjoying the taste of their drink.

Angela -- there are some really good NA beers, that's a whole different ball game. I'll order one because I don't like 7up, I like beer and I'm pregnant.

Only reason I sometimes drink these is if I am driving. Dont like fizzy carbonated drinks like coke, nor fruit juices.. Best is low alc. bitter. Much better than lager,,, But not a lot of places have it.. This is in UK.

I dont think that light beer taste bad. Both me and my boyfriend are gym buff but we enjoy drinking beer. So we always go for the light beer in order to cut half the calories. I would believe that is the reason that anyone else would drink light beer.

Hey!! I too enjoy "lite water". I'm an American.

Seriously, there are some (probably a lot) of Americans who enjoy drinking crappy beer, and that is their choice, they don't know any better. For the rest of us, there are many of us that do enjoy drinking yummy, tasty Ales and Porters and Stouts, so don't just generalize and group us all together.

Lite beer is for wussies. I brew my own beer, and a lot, and I work out, and I haven't noticed any "beer belly" besides just normal aging stuff. Seems to me the "gym buff" and her boyfriend just don't have the palate to drink good beer. Sorry for ya, just means more for me.

It's all about advertising. Does everyone remember why Mich Ultra was originally so popular? Because it was developed during the "low carb" phase and it was the first low carb beer. Now that low carb diets are out of style, AB just markets it as light. Light beers are marketed as healthier than regular beers, but you can watch calories and still drink good beer. Bud Light has 110 calories per bottle. Guinness has 126. When it comes down to deliciousness, I'll GLADLY take the extra 16 calories.

There is nothing wrong with lite beers they have just as much alcohol as a regular beer and you don't feel bloated when you drink a lite beer
