What does it mean to be the master distributor for certain brands of beer?!

Question: I was in a distributor other day buying a quarter keg and the owner was there. We were talking for a little and he said he was "the master distributor for the ****** brands of beer" as he rattled off several names, some the biggest in the business and others I've never heard of. I started to wonder what that means so I'm posting here now.
