Why is an old-style bottle cap opener sometimes called a "church key"?!

Question:

Why is an old-style bottle cap opener sometimes called a "church key"?

Answers:
It is the key to the church. Because thats the only time some people pray. Their prayer: ""Oh God I'll never drink again if you take away this hangover"".

You know Ive wondered that before too. The only reason I can think of is maybe becuse the end is kinda pointy like a church steeple and maybe a key because it opens the can. I really think I'm gonna star this question so I can rember to see other peoples answers. Youve got me thinking on it now lol

No particular reason, just a name that stuck.. As good as any I guess.

Because they originally looked like big fancy keys. and one could actually use a skeleton key to open a bottle of beer of one did not have a church key available. But everybody had one, because the beer companies gave them away. Car bumpers (back when they were steel) also worked quite well. Would not try it on a Toyota or Honda, or even a modern Chevy.
Originally it was only the bottle openers that were called church keys, but eventually that name applied to the combination can and bottle opener as well.
Does anything require them any more. I still keep one in my glove box for emergencies, but everything is twist-off or rings anymore.

Way back before drink cans (ie beer) had pop tops, or pull tabs, they were made of steel. Not aluminum. And to open your beer you had to have a special made device to open the top of the can.
Well, we all know that people who drink usually don't attend a church. So the name was dubbed a "church key" because they would have to quit drinking before going to church. It was like a backwards thought, because a person who used one to open his beer really needed to go to church, and not drink.
