Should Beer and Wine be Sold in Grocery and Convenience Stores In Canada?!

Question:

Should Beer and Wine be Sold in Grocery and Convenience Stores In Canada?

Like in Quebec and the United States?

It is currently illegal (in most provinces, except Quebec) to sell alcohol in stores other than a brewery, Brewery owned Store or a (usually gov't owned) liquor store

Most beer in Ontario is sold through "The Beer Store" (Brewer's Retail) which is owned By Labatt, Molson and Sleeman. This tends to kill the microbrew industry as they must pay tens of thousands to the megabrewers in "listing fees" to even sell their beer at their store. Not only that, but smaller niche market styles are not sold or made, as they will not sell enough units to cover the listing fee.

On top of that, Brewer's retail is 76% foreign owned, so It's money going out of the country. (Labatt is owned by InBev of Belgium, Sleeman by Sapporo of Japan and Molson is now Molson-Coors)

To those who say this would make it easier for kids to get beer - this is false. I'm sure a $5000 - $10,000 fine for underage sales would discourage that adequately.

I realize there is "dry counties" and such in the south - I've been there. But to my knowledge is is sold that way in most of the USA, unless you're in Mormonland.

In general, apart from the slightly lower drinking age, alcohol laws are very restrictive in Canada when compared to the US.

I am absolutely for the beer and Wine be sold in Grocery and convenient stores as well as in Gas stations.

I think the idea that it would then be easy for minors to get to it is nonsensical. This fear mongering idea serves only the interest of the government, and companies involved in the ownerships. It does not help thrive a fair competition.

It's NOT sold that way everywhere in the USA, most notably the south.
But it IS sold that way here in WI, and kids get it no matter what.
So YES---it should be sold in every gas station, quick-mart and grocery store at our "up nort'" neighbors like it is here!
