Help! What Red Wine?!


Question: Help Please? I have a sachet of spices to make mulled wine but I need to know what red wine I should buy to make it delicious? Can anyone out there help?

Once the spices, sugar and fruit go in you won't taste the wine so don't waste money, buy a table wine or something not too expensive.

I would use a merlot, but it's up to you..

A fruity wine is best. Blossom Hill Soft and Fruity or a decent Cabernet Sauvignon should do the trick.

Anything you enjoy really,,just don`t make it a £20+ bottle just in case it turns out nasty,,,

I use merlot, but only tesco's own. I cant see the point of getting an expensive wine when you are warming it up and adding spices.

I usually make mine with a rich burgundy. Pommay and Volnay are best if you're going for a very rich mix but I usually find that a Gamay suits almost everyone's taste.

I would also use Merlot,as it does need to be an expensive wine to use with your spices.

the cheapest red wine that you can get your hands on, with mulled wine spices it won't matter what you get they all taste pretty much the same, however what i would do is buy a good expensive chateau neuf de pape drink it with a nice meal and chuck the spices away, its like adding ice to to a single malt whisky

If you are chucking a load of spices into the wine, I wouldn't worry too much about which one you choose. Any reasonable wine will do.

If you want to have mulled wine with a bit of a kick, try puring a shot of (again cheap) brandy into the bottom of the glass before serving. Mulled wine tends to contain less alcohol as the alcohol evaporates during the heating process.

I agree with Pug..............

Don't spend a lot of money on the wine, use one you've had before.
After the spices have been added and the heating done you will not be able to tell a Merlot from a Burgundy.

Since your adding your own spices I would just go with a Burgundy, Gallo should be fine, Pretty much because Burgundy is a plain wine....
