Screwdriver - Vodka and orange Juice (Invented back in the 1950's) American oilmen working on an oil rig used screwdrivers to stir their vodka and orange juice.

Then the - Greyhound Vodka and Grapefruit Juice (a variation of the screwdriver)

Then you had the - Salty Dog, Vodka and Grapefruit Juice, with salt on the rim.

At the Phoenix Greyhpund racetrack, the "it drink" was a vodka and grapefruit (The thinking went that the acidic jusice helped keep you more alert. An enterprising young bartender put salt the rim (healthy stuff,salt I guess) and tada the salty dog was born.
