What are the pros and cons of going to bartending schools?
I'm doing a research paper where I have to ask a question regarding future schooling or jobs. Mine is bartending school vs. on the job training for being a bartender. I need this information definatley.

I spent $400 on bartending school and then found out bars hate hiring people who take those classes. You're better off learning how to bartend by first working as a barback and then slowly getting shifts behind the bar. You'll get way more respect, and bar owners and fellow bartenders will respect you for paying your dues instead of learning cheesy counting tricks and basic bar etiquette from scam schools. Good luck with your paper!
Most bartending academies offer job placement which is invaluable these days. If you are lucky enough to find yourself in the position where you can do on the job training then that's awesome.
you'll be wasting your money because the competition for such jobs is beyond high. many bar's don't stay around long enough for one to make money off of.
only pro is;if you do find a job you can make a lot of money off tips alone.
I had a brother-in-law that went bartending school. He landed a good job except it was tips only no wages. You have a reason to be a drunk. You never get ahead. Your in a rut and can't get out. You can't fine a wonerful wife in a bar. Your always in the dark. You know, I really can't find a good reason to be a bartender.
Going to school for bartending?? sounds like a waste of money and time..My sister became a bartender without any experience, and she makes really good money!
This has been asked this last week
So your not interested in doing your own research .
It mainly is who is interviewing you.
If it is small they may be impressed with your papers,
If it is a well knowing place a lot of importance can be placed on your papers say.
SO WHAT
You got some background that says "You Know What Your Doing"
Well You tell me can school hurt you ?? unless you run into some Red Neck and you don't want to work there $$$$
Job placement is the big thing with bartending schools. They typically wont put you in a high paying place, but they should land you a start. Now if you go to a reputable place you may want to return for a refresher class or seek placement say a year or so down the road one you have some experience. I have been involved in the entertainment and bar business for more than 20 years and it takes time and experience to learn how to handle drunks and folks that have over indulged.
Bartending school is inexpensive and worth the cost even for experienced bartenders looking to reenter the field. As with any school on the job training will be needed once entering the work force.
The exception here is you are looking to just work in a place that sells beers and shots .. skip the school and buy a bottle opener!!
Good luck
