Question:

How much alcohol can be sent into the U.S. via mail for personal use?

my brother is going on vacation tomorrow to mexico and we want some collectable bottles of tequila. problem is you can only bring one liter per person back with you. we need to know ho much if any at all you can send via mail. FOR PERSONAL USE ONLY!!!

Answers:
I live overseas and I tried to send some wine back to the U.S. The people at the post office would not even package it for me because they said that sending alcohol to the U.S. is not permitted.

That being said, I have heard that some people have gotten away with sending wine via a private carrier such as FedEx or UPS.

I have personally brought back more than one liter of alcohol in my luggage and it was not a problem. About a year ago I brought back 7 bottles of various liquors in my luggage. I declared them expected that I would have to pay tax on them but I did not pay any tax and I was let through customs with all of the bottles.

If your brother wants to bring home more than one liter of alcohol I suggest that he should declare what he has and maybe he'll get through customs without having to pay taxes on the bottles.

It's against the law to mail any spirits into the U.S., but some people get away with it by labelling it as a collectable bottle. There is an element of risk, so know what you're getting into.
