Why must I look over 21 when I can buy alcohol at 18?!

Question:

Why must I look over 21 when I can buy alcohol at 18?

Answers:
Is it legal for you to buy alcohol at 18? If not, the stores have to be very careful so they won't lose their license. Some stores ask that you be over 24.

they just use that age look as a guide. just to cover their butts.

and at least you can buy it at 18. I had to be 21 ;)

It not anything to do with you having to be 21, its because more and more 'kids' look older these days.
All there doing is making sure someone who look old enough actualy is.

For me its all lot less embaresing, I am 21 and definatly don't look it. So at least when they I.D. me there asking if I am 21 or under rather than am I 18.

Where do you live??
Do you know how MUCH a license cost each year.
I heard of people who buy JUST the license because they can sell it for MORE than the cost. It is not easy to get a license they have quotas..

were do you live at here in Texas you have too be 21 lucky girl !!

Cause so many kids don't look their age the store is erring on the side of safety in restricting the sale of alcohol to under 18's.Store and supermarkets have come in for a lot of criticism for selling alcohol to minors so now they will be far more stringent in who they sell to.There is no need for you to get uptight if you are asked for age confirmation,

You must be from Canada.....

strange that you cant buy alcohol at 18, but you can serve your country, and be killed for your country at 18. funny old life isnt it?

feel lucky you have to prove your age .....younger looking is a lot better as you get older ...trust me ...i"m 45 but look 29 hahaha

UK 18 to buy booze.
USA 21,advise,emigrate.

I find it's annoying to, but I suppose it's only the effort of carrying our ID for us and flashing it to the cashier where as it'd prevent underagers from drinking.

A lot of pubs here in Ireland will ask for ID if you're under 24. So 6 years of being allowed to drink but needing ID, great. ^_^

I guess the shop owner wants to be sure you are indeed over 18. 18 year old look 14 these days and so 21 years old may look 18.

If you have an ID then there should be no problems!

If a store is caught out for selling alcohol to minors they get fined a lot of money. In Tesco the actual person who served you is fined personally rather than the store! They check people who look under 21 because some teenages look older than they actually are, it's very hard to tell. If you are 18 or over though and have ID then you will still be able to buy it. I got asked for ID 2 weeks ago and I am 25! Just take it as a compliment, when you are older you will still look young.

It's just so that if a shop assistant asks your age it feels like there is less conflict between you and them.

Basically they can say "well you look about twenty so I better ask your age" rather than "are you really 18?" which can sound a bit like they are basically calling you a lying b*****d....

Most countries aside from the US that have alcohol have an 18 year old minimum drinking age, not just the UK.

As to the original Q, I've seen 15 year olds with real beards and have seen many more that could easily pass as 18. Personally I think they should card you till they see the gray in your hair 'cause no young adult wants to copy that!
