what are the ingredients to making oatmeal on the stove?!

Question: What are the ingredients to making oatmeal on the stove?
Answers:

This makes one generous portion. For 2 servings ? Double.

Get ingredients and cooking tools ready. For my oatmeal, I usually have the following:

? cup old-fashioned oatmeal
? cup milk + ? cup water
1 medium banana*
vanilla + cinnamon
toasted almonds** + toasted coconut**
some sort of dried fruit
Tools
1 small sauce pan
Spatula

Add oatmeal, water and milk to sauce pan. Turn stove to “medium.” Give the pan a quick swish to make sure all the oats are covered.

Let oatmeal cook until it starts to bubble – about 3 minutes.

Stir a couple times and allow oatmeal to bubble for another minute or so, stirring occasionally, or until you pull back the oatmeal with a spatula and the oatmeal stays in place. (If you like creamier oats, just don’t cook as long!)

Turn stove off and remove pan from burner. Add in cinnamon and vanilla, and stir with spatula to combine.

Transfer oatmeal to serving bowl.

Lick spatula. (optional).

Slice bananas on top.

Top with dried fruit.

Sprinkle on toasted almonds & coconut.

Drizzle with maple syrup.

Enjoy !

Tips / Notes:

* Instead of slicing a banana on top of the oatmeal, you can just cut it up right into your pot when you add the milk and water to the oatmeal. Just mash with the back of your spatula when the oatmeal starts to bubble – it will get really creamy and delicious! Also, the riper the banana – the better!

** To toast almonds: place almonds on a microwave safe plate and cook for 1 minute. Shuffle almonds around a little and cook for another 10-30 seconds, or until they are golden. Be careful not to overcook!

*** To toast coconut: place coconut on microwave safe plate and cook in increments of 10-12 seconds, shuffling around the coconut between each increment. This stuff burns easily so make sure you are watching. The reward is WELL worth the effort though!

Time Saving Tips:

1. On Sundays:

Toast enough coconut and almonds for the entire week. Measure out one portion servings of each and place together in tupperware or plastic baggies. easure out one portion servings of oatmeal and place in tupperware or plastic baggies.

2. Night before:

Combine 1/2 cup water and 1/2 milk in a little tupperware container. Place in fridge. Cut up dried fruit and place in tupperware or plastic baggies.

Other Tips:

Keep spices/flavorings like syrup, vanilla and cinnamon in a cabinet next to, or near your stove. Then you just have to reach up, use them and place them right back!

Diane, it is just oats and water for the most basic of recipes. You should add a pinch of salt, some add a bit of butter. You can also add your toppings at this point...fruit, syrup, cinnamon, sugar, brown sugar, any and all. If your fruit is frozen or dehydrated, it will be more pleasant to eat if you cook it in. Fresh fruit is usually better left until the end. Adding your items now infuses your cooking water with those flavors, so that the oatmeal itself absorbs them and they taste, obviously...cooked. Waiting to add them later is a different flavor, not as well developed but not as easy to burn.

Round box oatmeal is so much better than those dang packets.

Your recipe instructions should be on the package. Depends if it is quick oats or whole rolled oats. If you have steel cut oats, it is different than those.

All you need is the oatmeal and water.
Allow 1/2C of oats to 1C of water t per person depending on how much eact wantsto eat.
Cook on low stirring almost all of the time, adding more water if required.
It is very much esier to do in the MW.
