I have a friend who broke his ankle and he drinks a case a beer a day....?!

Question: I have a friend who broke his ankle and he drinks a case a beer a day....?
...Would this drinking cause abnormal swelling?
He had surgery to add pins and plates to broken ankle, over 3 months ago. He has lots of swelling in the ankle and will not stop drinking. Is there anyone out there who can help me with this issue. He will not listen to me so I thought if I found the information to show him that he is only making his situation worse, possibly he might take the advise.

The body is not getting rid of all the fluids that it suppose to. Drinking a case of beer is not helping any, or any other amount of fluids to that capacity. He needs to go see a Doctor, he might have Congestive heart failure, Kidney Failure or anemia. All of these will cause swelling in the ankles, feet, and liquid in the lungs and shortness of breath. They usually prescribe a Zestoric, Lasiks, or other pill to get rid of the excess liquid. If you do nothing you are risking the chance that the liquid will smother the heart, causing a heart attack. For safety reasons he needs to see a Doctor, this problem can cause death.

All the hardare in the foot will cause the swelling as the body tries to deal with "foreign invaders." The problem, however, is that he's supposed to be working the foot. A case of beer will go a long way to making a crippled person continue to sit around and do no physical therapy. Half the swelling is organic, the other half is psychological--laziness. Get him up and on his feet and working that foot as much as possible (i.e., as much as the doctor permits) to get the blood flowing THRU it instead of to it.

I do not think the drinking is making the swelling worse. I do think he is an alcoholic though and since you are a "friend" maybe you should consider going to some al-alon meetings so you can realize it is not your job to get your friend to quit. My dad broke his ankle from falling off the steps when he was drunk and that did not stop him from drinking. He was an alcoholic but no longer drinks due to health problems.

It`s not the alcohol , but the damage to his organs the alcohol is causing that is the cause of his ankles swelling .

Swelling in the ankles and/or feet can be caused by problems with the liver . One of the signs of liver failure is swelling in the legs .

One of the primary causes of liver failure is alcohol !! The more he drinks , the more the liver is damaged . This damage is irreversible ........

no but your friend should not drink 6 beers every day it's not doing his internal organs any good. Tell him to reduce his beer intake. Also drinking on a daily basis isn't good either because your body needs a rest sometimes from alcohol. He really should consider cutting down on his beer intake. Wont be good in the long term future. He's overloading his liver and kidneys and never giving them a break which is not good. He should not drink 6 beers every day and should have at least a few days off alcohol each week to give the body a break.

if he is drinking a case of beer a day, his broken ankle is the least of his problems.

Sounds like he has a drinking problem. He needs help with that first. Try some Antabuse.

How much is a US case? In the UK it's 12 bottles and a case would be excessive.

not in the area of the ankle! lol

Alcohol in large amounts can be very bad for you. Alcohol can damage your stomach, liver, kidneys, and many other organs. If consumed under the age of approximately 25 years old the brain can sustain permanent damage as well because it has not fully developed. In addition to direct harm done to the organs alcohol can also cause many types of cancer. When the body breaks down alcohol it turns it into an organic chemical compound called Acetaldehyde. Acetaldehyde is a well known carcinogen found in cigarette tobacco that can cause massive DNA damage. It can cause multiple forms of cancer such as oral, lung, stomach, liver, and even brain cancer. Acetaldehyde is the main cause of hangovers.

Also, contrary to popular belief, 1-2 glasses of wine a day aren't necessarily that good for you. The only proven chemical substances in wine that have health benefits are Resveratol and Quercetin. Resveratrol is a non flavored phenolic compound found in grape skins. It is known for its antioxidant properties as well as its cancer fighting agents. It has shown to improve symptoms of breast, skin, gastric, colon, esophageal, prostate, and pancreatic cancer. Quercetin is a flavored that is well known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and can aid in preventing heart disease. Both of these compounds are found in grapes, apples, capers, onions, and many green vegetables. With a steady diet of these foods one can obtain as much or even more of the forementioned compounds while avoiding the risks of alcohol altogether.

However much you might hate to hear this, as well as him, if you need something to get you in a "high" state of mind marijuana is the best and healthiest way to go. It does not do what many people believe it to. Infact there are serveral benefits from smoking marijuana that are not even noticed by the public. here is the resource to what im talking about http://www.jackherer.com/thebook/

However if you can just quit drinking for a while that would be good as well.
