If you are invited to a potluck outing, what do you bring for everyone to eat?!
Answers: glorified rice or seven-layer salad or homemade bread/rolls and butter
Last potluck I attended I took Chicken Bog for everyone:
1 (3-pound) chicken, quartered
1 pound smoked link sausage
1 cup chopped onion
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter
2 teaspoons Seasoned Salt (recommended: Lawry's)
2 teaspoons House Seasoning, recipe follows
1 teaspoon ground red pepper
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
3 bay leaves
8 cups water
3 cups raw white rice
Slice the sausage into 1/2-inch pieces. In a stockpot, combine the chicken, sausage, onion, butter, seasonings and bay leaves. Add the water, bring to a boil, cover, and cook at a low boil for 40 minutes. Remove the chicken from the pot and let cool slightly. Pick the meat from the bones, discarding the bones and skin. Add the rice to the pot and bring to a boil, stirring well. Boil for 10 minutes, then reduce the heat, cover the pot, and simmer for 10 minutes, or until the rice is done. Remove the bay leaves, and return the chicken to the pot.
House Seasoning:
1 cup salt
1/4 cup black pepper
1/4 cup garlic powder
Mix ingredients together and store in an airtight container for up to 6 months.
I make a mean potato salad for summer picnics. But I have a great cheeseball recipe that people always ask for. You need 2 jars of Kraft Olive Pimento spread, 1 jar of Kraft Roka Blue spread, 1 jar of Kraft Olde English spread, a stick of butter, a half cup of cheese, a dash of tobasco and a splash of cream. Mix it all together and roll into 2 or 3 balls. Refrigerate to firm up a bit and roll in chopped pecans.
It depends. We usually try to see what everyone else would like to prepare...some ladies have their own thing that they cook every time/others like to try new recipes on an unsuspecting but willing crowd...that way you don't end up with 20 baked beans, 12 macaroni salads, 62 potato salads, 124 green bean casseroles
I usually bring something odd that I like because at a pot luck you are supposed to try new stuff, and Bread, there is never enough bread at them.
If power is available I usually bring a crockpot of lil smokies or meatballs in bbq sauce. If no power a bacon ranch macaroni salad.
Bert
Homemade mexican dip with chips.
I can always be counted on for desserts or desserty-type dishes. I love making brownies, cookies or cakes.
I've been known to make a mean buffalo wing dip too (which is ironic b/c I'm a vegetarian). It's popular among many audiences.
