Kosher Gelatin: Vegetarian friendly or not?!

Question:

Kosher Gelatin: Vegetarian friendly or not?

Ive been a very strict veggie for 10 years now but always steered clear of anything that said "Kosher Geltain" because one person tells me it is plant based, but another tells me it is made from kosher cows.

Which is it? Should I stay away anyways?

Answers:
Kosher gelatin might be from a cow that was slaughtered according to Jewish law, or it might be from fish or it might be labeled as kosher by an agency that holds that gelatin is technically (according to Jewish law) a chemical and not an animal product.

The only advantage to a product labeled as having Kosher gelatin is that it might be slightly more likely to describe it's source. However, if you call the manufacturer, they are usually more than happy to answer questions about ingredients.

All gelatin is animal based. Look for agar-agar products.

Kosher gelatin can be made from either plant, fish, or cow. It differs on a case by case basis. If you need to find out, you need to research each product by calling the kosher supervision company or manufacturer and ask them.

Made from Kosher cows. Stay clear...

Yeah, Kosher doesn't mean it's from plants. Beef is a kosher meat. I wish they'd be more specific!

augar Augar is fine, and if it says "plant based gelatin or something like that, it should be fine too.

there are alot of kosher foods that are meats. the term in its original meaning-denoting that which is proper and meets accepted rules and standards.

When I was in my culinary class one of the girls there couldn't use anything that had been made for cows hooves which is primarily what gelatin is made from. She was of the Hindu religion or Muslin or something. Anyway she brought in a product that she knew she could use and shared with the rest of us. So I would suggest that you go to a store that caters to Vegans. Talk to the sales people, read the labels, your in charge of what goes into your body. Now and forever. Best wishes and good luck!!!!!

Gelatin is made from bones. I have never heard of a kosher cow, a cow is an animal. Check also your cheeses, some have rennet in it.

It will still be made out of animal products. kosher just pretty much means "clean animal" as opposed to "no animal" I would not risk it.

Its only called kosher because the animal was "humanely" killed, as if there could be such a thing. Its still made from the bones, skins, ligaments and tendons of slaughtered animals. Agar Agar is a seaweed based substance that makes a suitable replacement for gelatine-it gels very quickly.

Kosher gelatin is most likely just pork free or made from fish sources. Unless it says carageenan (seaweed) stay away.

I have bought Kosher gelatin made by "Streits" and the package specifically says "Made from vegetable based products, NO animal products used in the process".

I have answered this question from people at least 10 times since becoming a Yahoo Questions answerer, it is always the same, it does not matter when you ask it the answer is always the same.
